Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is a deluxe camping resort with tent and RV campsites and free-standing cabins with full kitchens that can accommodate up to six guests, plus one baby in a crib. This is one of the original Disney resorts and is the most economical option in the Magic Kingdom resort area. Fort Wilderness is unique in the way it blends "real Florida" with all the imagination and wonder of the Disney World theme parks. The campground has so much to see and do that it really is a destination in itself.  In fact, many guests camp at Fort Wilderness every year and do not step foot in the theme parks. Even if you never plan on staying here, it is worth putting on your itinerary for all the recreation offerings, dining options, character opportunities and holiday season decorations.  

Fort Wilderness Pro & Con

Advantages - Disney's Fort Wilderness Campground is a great option for larger families and guests with tents, pop-up trailers and RV's. The campground definitely has a more laid back and relaxing pace that than the busy Disney World hotels. Being able to prepare some or all of your own meals can save a lot of money. The campground has a very nice pool area with water slide, lots of on-site activities and boat transportation to take you directly to the Magic Kingdom. You can view the Electric Water Pageant and the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the beach area. There is a nightly Campfire program that includes a Sing-Along with Chip and Dale (free) and outdoor "Movie under the Stars". The campground's "Pet-Friendly" campsites and cabins are one of the few places on Disney property that guests can stay with their pets. The campground guests enjoy the same benefits as the Disney value and moderate resorts hotels: Early Theme Park Entry, free parking at the resort and theme parks, and complimentary transportation to the parks.

Disadvantages - The campground experience doesn't appeal to everyone - it is either your thing or it isn't. The resort is HUGE with its own internal bus system which means that guests without cars need to allow extra time for transportation to the Disney World theme parks. Taking advantage of the resort's many recreational activities may also require a bus ride as they're not all within walking distance from your site or cabin. While it is a wonderful, clean campground, it is not cheap and campsites are often excluded from many Disney discounts and promotions; though the cabins are usually included in promotions. Because of the size, the resort refillable souvenir mugs included with the Disney dining plans are almost useless here. The swimming pools do not provide pool towels.

Types of Accommodations at Disney's Fort Wilderness

Cabins: In 2024, these cabins are being replaced with new cabins that will be part of the Disney Vacation Club (DVC) program.

There are currently 407 air-conditioned cabins, including 13 handicap accessible cabins, with rustic styled decor. Each cabin has one bedroom, one bathroom, a full kitchen, dining area and a living room area with a couch. They can accommodate up to 6 guests + 1 baby, in a crib. Although this is a campground, the cabins receive regular maid service just like the other Disney World hotels. The cabins measure 12-feet by 42-feet and are certainly more spacious than most hotel rooms but may feel a little cramped for people accustomed to spacious condominiums.  

Each cabin, includes:

• fully furnished private cabin in the woods spacious enough to sleep 6 adults.

• living room with double-size sleeper sofa

• bedroom with queen bed and twin bunks

• full bathroom

• private patio

• charcoal grill

• modern kitchen complete with a refrigerator, dishwasher, convection/microwave oven and 2 countertop burners

• Dinnerware for six people (drinking glasses, cups, bowls, dinner plates & salad plates)

• Serving and cooking items like a can opener, serving utensils, knives, pitcher, glass measuring cup, etc.

• Pans and baking dishes

• Potholders, sponges, and dishtowels

• Dish soap, paper towels and trash bags

• Bedding (blankets, pillows, sheets)

• Towels

• Wall-mounted hair dryer

• Free transportation to the Disney Parks

• Guests at the campsite receive free parking for one motorized vehicles; additional vehicles and parking at the cabins are subject to Disney's regular parking fees.

Campsites: There are 20 camping loops with 4 types of campsites accommodate everything from tents to 45-foot and longer RVs, with a maximum of 10 Guests per site. The sites have brush and trees to give you a little space from your neighbors. All of the sites are "back-in" sites that can accommodate vehicles between 25 - 60 feet in length. Tent sites have a sandy pad. You must provide the length of your RV along with details like number of slide-outs or awnings at the time of booking to be sure you get an appropriately sized site for your needs. There are 15 conveniently located and wonderfully clean Comfort Stations with restrooms, showers, and coin laundry facilities. There are several pet-friendly loops.  When you make your reservation, you must note that you are traveling with a pet and there will be an additional fee for pets. Tent campers - remember that Florida has all kinds of extreme weather including heat, high humidity, cold temperatures, rain, and lightning; be sure that you're prepared for these conditions so that you can enjoy your Disney vacation. Each campsite, includes:

• Each campsite is equipped with privacy-enhancing landscaping, water, cable television and electrical hook-ups, a picnic table and a charcoal grill.

• Most campsites also include a sewer hook-up, and some even permit pets.

• Partial hook up sites typically for tent and pop-up trailers on a 10-ft by 25-ft concrete pad.

• Full hook up sites with electricity, water, sewer, cable, and high-speed Internet. 10-ft by 50-ft concrete pad.

• Premium sites can accommodate RVs that are 45 feet long or longer. 18-ft by 60-ft concrete pad.

• Preferred sites are closer to main activity areas and a have 10-ft by 45-ft concrete pad.

• Picnic table

• Charcoal grill

• No extra charge for use of comfort station showers

• Free transportation to the Disney Parks

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort Transportation

• Disney buses are available to take resort guests to the Theme parks, water parks and Disney Springs

• An internal bus system runs throughout the resort, providing transportation between the campsites and the various amenities. The internal bus system will also take you to the Outpost bus stop, where you catch the Disney Transportation to the parks

• Boat transportation is available to the Magic Kingdom, the Contemporary Resort and Wilderness Lodge at the Settlement Marina.

Our Opinion of Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort

We're divided in our opinions of Fort Wilderness - Steve (co-owner of Build A Better Mouse Trip) is NOT a fan. He feels that camping should be camping but a Disney World vacation should be a Disney World vacation centered around the theme parks. He really doesn't like the extra transportation time required by the internal bus system. On the other side of the fence is Annette (Steve's wife and company co-owner) who LOVES the campground because it feels real in the midst of the largely artificial (though totally amazing) aspects of the Disney World. There is no doubt that there is a lot to do at the campground and that it has been a popular choice since Disney World opened in 1971. If you want to hit the ground running early and spend most of your time at the theme parks, you'll probably be happier at a traditional hotel. If you are looking for a vacation experience that includes theme parks but also includes quieter family activities and some down time, you may find that Fort Wilderness is a perfect fit.
